For those visiting for the first time this post summarizes the Chrysalis design process in one photo heavy stream and incorporates most of the photos posted previously. More to come.

Twelve people variously interested in mobile architecture, design, collaborative work, art, environmental design all met for the first time in early 2011 to start a 5 day Workshop with New York based artist Mary Mattingly, a deceptively quiet young woman who is astoundingly prolific and in town for 2 weeks as part of a residency. After Day 1 five people returned and, meaningful or not, all were women, most knew how to sew, and by occupations were artists, architect, writer, landscape architect in training, seamstress.

People were willing to put time in on this project for different reasons. Mine were that I enjoy collaborative work with interesting people and that this project met my criteria of having to be low cost, low barrier (except for time), conceptual, and could be documented online and result in an object or idea that could be transferable to other projects.

On Day one Mary showed and discussed some of the ideas she had about mobile architectural and these are detailed in this post.

"Huh? So that's it?"

That's kind of what I thought when we had part of it up last weekend. It is dwarfed by the trees, not that it was intended to dominate the landscape, it was meant to be a solo structure that could adapt itself to being scalable and moved around an environment.
We are curious to see how else we can configure it tomorrow, maybe you will have some ideas? We will have a sketch book and markers out for people to use.

Today I gathered up all the solar powered lights and planted them in the sun to start to charge.
Morgan dropped off a flag she made, to represent her participation in the project, as she will not be able to join us as she is on her way to walk the Camino de Santiago trail in Spain.
I unrolled each section this afternoon and made notes on what has to be sewn tomorrow to finish them. Not much, a few grommets, tabs and one last tent pole channel.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145774643566064559.post-49440292756497931732011-09-05T17:37:00.001-04:002012-01-09T18:54:00.339-05:00Trial Run - Photographs of a prototype in processLisa, Anne and I met today to try out a few ideas in advance of Nuit Blanche. Our three hours together were exactly what we hope will happen that night. A collaboration, experimentation, exploration and conversation about mobility, structures and related tangential topics. With the Nuit Blanche White Night bus stopping right at our corner, stop by and visit. We want to talk.
Found this movie about the workshopHere is a video Mary Mattingly made about the workshop.
Mary Mattingly will be at the set up during Nuit Blanche, and we are looking forward to seeing her again.

The schedule for Nuit Blanche is intense, and I have two other projects earlier in the evening, but I want to highlight a few performances by friends that are worth seeing.

First, right across the street from us Ben Grossman is setting up an improvisational sound sculpture, Rainforest, in 28 Essex Street, with found sculpture contributions, including two by friends Billy Rubin and Paddy O'Lantern. I hope the sounds from RainForest will flow over to Chrysalis.

Fall on Your Feet dance collective is also performing at 28 Essex Street at 11:30 p.m. so after seeing them, come visit us.

And, even more things are happening at 28 Essex Street, the future home of the Guelph Arts Works, with art by members hanging in part of the space. This is a very cool, raw space that will be converted to studios, gallery and teaching space later this year. Come out to see it before the transformation.

My son's former teacher Christina Kingsbury has an installation under the Heffernan Foot Bridge, take a look if you are over near the River Run Centre.

My favourite group of artists, my colleagues at the Whitestone Gallery Collective, are planning another amazing evening of activities from 6 - 11 p.m. at the gallery at 80 Norfolk.
Last year's near nudity, painted bodies, spoken word and complimentary Planet Bean coffee made for a memorable evening. Check out the video artist John Fleming made about that night.

I will have two projects there, at 10 p.m. Tag You're it , and, ongoing from 6 - 11 p.m., I wish this was which is also going to be at 10 Carden all night.

See you there!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145774643566064559.post-16014680742568186342011-08-08T13:20:00.004-04:002012-01-09T18:53:47.037-05:00One section of Chrysalis hanging around a back yardJust checking out a few ideas over the weekend. The tree here is too large for my idea of using it as support pole, the chrysalis becomes more of a lean - to. The grommets used to attach guy ropes need to be moved so they are closer to the tent pole sleeves and then they will help pull the structure tighter.

Wendy cannot join us for the Nuit Blanche but has recruited an architect friend to join us. Lisa Harmey is arriving from overseas and getting straight to work on her section of the Chrysalis.
Update: and she did! Jet lagged and all, she arrived in Guelph and spent most of the day at the studio, sewing, thinking and talking. For Nuit Blanche, Chrysalis will become a temporary, outdoor community space. We invite you to bring your self, your stories, your music, and ideas about mobility and metamorphosis to our campfire. Artists, landscape architects, poets, and seamstresses designed and built Chrysalis. Guelph artists Rebecca Erickson and Anne Schnurr, local poet Carla Reimer, UK architect Lisa Harmey and New York artist Mary Mattingly will represent the collaborative team behind this innovative community structure.
I always get a very stiff and sore neck. But, finally, my section is pretty much complete. On the weekend I located tent poles (buy a cheap tent and use those as they are already shock corded together) and used trusty old duct tape to bundle them for extra support,

Tonight I stitched and ripped, and stitched and ripped, until I got the poles to fit into their tabs properly.

I had been waiting to use the grommet setter borrowed from the Musagetes Foundation and decided tonight to add some handy tabs with grommets where rope, elastic, S hooks or other practical fasteners could be used to increase the options of securing the Chrysalis to something else.

I suspect that the weight of 6 of these Chrysalises will need to have a centre pole support, so I hope we find a nuit blanche location that has a nice tall tree. I think a bungee cord wrapped 7' above ground and large S -hook or even some cord to run through a grommet at the top and then through the bungee cord would help secure the tops.
There is still some room for some creative touches now that the basic structure is complete. I have been making long braids of sailcloth fabric. I started these after watching Mary, in the final hour of the workshop, start to tie together strips of fabric in a sort of loose, knotted rope.

I thought this was an unusual use of leftover fabric, and she mentioned that it was surprisingly hard to find strong rope. I wondered about that, and if in her experience on Waterpod, or in other projects, this had been a problem. I will have to ask her. After she said that though, I noticed that, in fact, we have almost no rope at home, no twine, no cotton string and so I started to braid the scraps too, and for fun wrapped them around things outside and am currently using a length to cordon off part of the yard that is very, very soggy.
A September 10th sleepover! The Musagetes Foundation is going to sponsor the project for the Guelph Jazz Festival's Nuit Blanche!

This will mean an overnight set up, somewhere within 1 mile 2 of downtown Guelph. Now we really have to get cracking on the sewing.

The other participant's in this presentation are mixed media artist and teacher Anne Schnurr, poet Carla Reimer, landscape architect in training Morgan Crowley, architect Lisa Harmey, and artisanal shirt maker and curator Wendy Rofihe and installation artist Janet Morton.

A very creative crew of people and I am looking forward to working with them over the summer.

Today's plan is adding a few grommets and sewing shut the bottom of the tent pole tubes so they stay in place.
A plan is unfoldingI am invested in helping to support this project get moved along to a point where we can set it up. Partly because I have put a lot of time in it; partly because I like projects, and this one interests me; and partly because this type of interactive collaboraton is where my own art practice is evolving.

So, on June 1, I sent an e-mail asking if the others were interested in setting up during nuit blanche on September 10th, and they all were, so we have a deadline!

There are some interesting possibilities, perhaps at the park area beside River Run Centre? Down by the boathouse? On that grassy triangle of land across from the Guelph market?

I have been plugging away at my piece and have reached the stage of needing to find some sort of support poles. Yesterday I tried curtain rods, a tent pole, and pvc piping. The tent poles won, curtain rods buckle and 1/2 " pvc piping is too flexible.

Kits for shock corded tent poles are a pain to put together, but I found a $20 tent that has two poles that, when folded back on themselves, are the correct length. Problem solved.
Also we have a name! I think Carla, the writer in the group, came up with the idea of using the name Chrysalis, or maybe it was Morgan, and lot sof other ideas were tossed around, but his one stuck.
The project is called Chrysalis, Mobile, Scaleable Wearable Architecture. The official blog for it is in process, so right now there is just a marker photo at that link. Will let you know when more is posted there.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145774643566064559.post-63469036662644918652011-05-15T17:49:00.002-04:002012-01-09T18:47:15.678-05:00Velcro stitch and rip dayI have a set of Velcro strips to hold the structure to the others, and to itself when used as an individual unit. I borrowed the model we made at the workshop and spread it out on the studio floor today and tried to get mine to match. Somewhat vexing as the units are not exactly the same size and yet the Velcro has to match, more or less, so they can attach together.
The other day I photographed one of the sections outside
The next step is to get everyone together for a sewing bee to get a few more completed so we can try a set up outside. It seems much like a tent but shapeless and without poles ( so far) and it lends itself to ideas of tying draping, covering, wrapping and rolling.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145774643566064559.post-1890678701151131002011-05-02T15:53:00.007-04:002012-01-09T18:36:43.760-05:00We're still working! The Mobile Architecture project is still in process! We are planning on an outdoor trial run of the pieces in the next month. One person just emailed that she is looking at modifications to use it with a canoe.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145774643566064559.post-79760333949179332892011-04-17T16:56:00.009-04:002012-01-09T18:35:59.883-05:00Collaboration, intellectual property , ownership and all of that kind of stuffThere was some conversation the other night about ownership when it comes to art made by more than one person. Working on a purposefully collaborative project is different than the way a lot of artists work.

Most artists are solo productionists, they conceive, design and construct their art all by themselves. Some artists are large scale project makers and, even then, the project is almost always their conception and design, and they are the executive director of it. The final piece is considered to belong to them.

This project is very different.

We came together through the efforts of a foundation whose mandate for this project was to select, "artistic practices that happen outside of cultural institutions to be the priority for our programs. Instead of the tangible object resulting from practice, we are interested in artistic intent as manifest in process. Participatory elements are at the core of an artistic practice—participation that leads to greater civic and empathic engagement."
(Shawn Van Sluys, Executive Director, Musagetes)

So, right from the start we found ourselves in somewhat uncharted waters, at least as artists. I liken it to working on a committee where, as a group, you work towards creating something that may not directly benefit you, but the participation, process and outcome are the goal.

For example, in my other work life I help create community based groups for parents. These are created by ad hoc groups; are fluid in their process and the result is not owned by anyone person or agency; yet, any committee member could list on their CV that they helped develop the group.

The structure we are creating for Mobile Architecture was designed and made in a joint decision making process by 7 people. The materials were paid for by Musagetes and some were donated by the people working on the project. The labour was supplied by everyone in varying amounts of time, dependent on availability.

Participants took sections with them to continue to invest their time and effort into making what is essentially a flat, fabric sculpture that can morph into its own 3-D sculptural shape or be joined to a group of them to create a whole new structure.

They are a prototype of an idea that, in itself, may be more easily executed by just buying tents and velcroing them together, but that is not the point of the project.

This group, working together in a process based, interactive manner may, or may not, succeed in creating a working prototype of their design. The purpose of the workshop was to initiate a process, an exposure to new ideas from within and outside of the group.

I am interested to see how the people who are working on this project will continue to evolve their own piece of the structure.

A few people started working at 4 p.m. with the rest arriving over the next 3 hours. A two person film crew from CAFKA and another photographer arrived to document what we were doing and we focused on completing one structure to try out in front of the cameras.

It was busy and made more complicated because the tools i.e. sewing machines, were a constant hassle tonight, jamming, needles breaking and thread knotting. Some were sewing, others were calculating and preparing what materials people would need to take with them to finish the units on heir own, and we were all focussed on getting one ready to try outside before it was too dark.

Just as the light was fading, we took the finished structure outside, and had a chance to look at it laid out on the grass, wrapped around all of us, set up with tent poles and folded in half as single person unit. Further modifications (grommets!) that would help stabilize the structure were identified.
There were a lot of photographs taken of the structure, but none by me, so once Musagetes has the images I will post some here. (Update : Never did get the photographs but here is a shot form that night Musagetes use don a postcard for the project)
Tonight there were, let's see, six women, two sewing machines, two scissors, two seam rippers, two photographers (also women) , metres and metres of slithery silicone coated fabric and more design modifications on the fly. We are down to the wire in terms of timing. Mary leaves Thursday morning so tomorrow is the last day the group can try to finish one complete unit so we all know how to make them.
I will do a wrap up post once we are finished. Photographers came tonight to document the process so those photographs will also be posted once available

Today was a day off from the 1Mile2 Mobile Architecture Workshop but Mary decided to work this afternoon at Diyode, so three of us joined in and collectively we put in another 20 hours working on the project. We all helped to cut and sew large pieces of architectural fabric that slithered and slid off the big pine work table.

We should be able to make 6 of the unit covers before Mary leaves. The design is modified every time we work on it, and it was a bit overwhelming today to see how much we had to do, especially after deciding to make each unit double walled.

Two of the people collaborating today have a lot of experience working with textiles and large scale projects and they supplied some interesting materials like Industrial Velcro, seat belt webbing and an extra sewing machine.

We talked a bit today about how only women had continued on with this project. I am not sure why. For me, the collaborative creative and production aspect, and the opportunity to work with Mary Mattingly were a big draw, so it was easy for me to decide to clear my schedule to invest the time in this project.

By the way, Diyode is a really useful spot to work in. A big work table, great location, lots of parking, tools, and help if you need it.
After a rainy cold morning we met at Diyode this afternoon for three hours. With four participants, plus Mary and two staff from Musagetes, we made very good progress.

Today we talked more about the pattern and how it would all fit together. After seeing some of the conceptual digital collages Mary presented at her talk, I wondered if it would be possible for us to take a photograph of a Guelph location and digitally add images of 6 of the units. Not enough time this week, but quite possible with Photoshop.

After some more calculations we taped together sheets of newsprint and started to draft the pattern.

For each individual unit we are going to need an 8' x 14' piece of fabric cut into a particular curved shape. We unrolled the bolt of silicone treated sailcloth and started to cut and sew. By 4:45 we had the shell piece of the mobile architecture piece constructed and took it outside to admire.

With the sun breaking through the clouds, and a good breeze blowing, we had to hang on tight as we stretched it out. A warm gold colour, it glowed in the sun. We experimented wrapping it around volunteers

We talked about a name for the individual units. We were lucky to have our poet back today as she took on the task of looking at possible words and definitions for us to consider. We had a pattern maker and landscape architect calculating angles, curves and shapes, I helped out with taping, cutting, and photographing. There was a lot of interesting conversation about; problem solving, mobility, what people might want to have with them if mobile, technology, raising chickens and how yesterday Mary brokered the rescue of 12 chickens who needed a home to someone that was looking for chickens!

At one point we had one person using Google Sketch Up trying to figure out how to make a 3D visualization of some of our design; others were talking about a video game (Little Big Planet 2) where players collaborate online to build things; and we all moved back and forth between the two rooms at Diyode helping out where needed.

The architecture of the piece reminds us variously of pods, canoes, tents and boulders. A few people are putting in some extra time tomorrow to continue sewing and to invent some pockets, holders, arms and such for the shell. When we gather again on Tuesday night for 3 hours we should be able to start looking at the fit of the poles and the backpack attachment.

A few other sites to take a look at are the Everyone Deserves a Roof as an example of a mobile home, and
Four of the group from last night did not return. One called in sick, but no word from the other three. Maybe it was not what they were expecting?

Joining a collaborative interdisciplinary project like this is different. You arrive, meet a group of people for the first time and try to arrive at consensus about how to build something that is based on the idea of mobile architecture. There are some smart and savvy people participating and ideas galore, but we have to keep the process moving forward if we want to trial run even a partial model in this 19 hour workshop. We made good progress today and a template for tomorrow's work is in place.

Mary showed more slides and we looked at;
Yona Friedman
Bigelow Aerospace commercial space stations
Super Adobe structures
and slides of various tent structures from around the world.

I brought in a few things for "show and tell", a 28 year old oiled cotton rain jacket, some reusable food wrap made from bees waxed soaked cloth, Another artist brought in some books to share images of sculptures and houses. I forwarded some links for the group to look at about mobile shelters.

We talked about what each of us imagined a mobile personal structure would like and some people started to sketch their ideas on newsprint on the table. We agreed that we wanted to make something that was portable, wearable and provided both the opportunity for solo shelter, and a way to attach to others to form a gathering space. We looked at using spooled fabric, jacket, and backpacks.

We had the advantage of 7 hours together today; with a delicious lunch supplied by With the Grain, compliments of Musagetes; and enough cars to make a field trip to a local recycling depot to look for materials. After lunch we went out looking for materials and came back with a 2 discarded sun umbrella frames and a cover, some aluminum tent poles, and fishing rods.

Back at Diyode, some people started to make a maquette of the structure with coffee filters, stir sticks and coffee lids. One artist used pliers and wire and fashioned a human shaped armature to use to help scale the piece.

As the project started take shape, and we started to handle the umbrella poles and other recycled items it was clear they were too heavy.
We really wanted shock corded tent poles, so I went home and loaned 3 that extended to 20' each that could be used for the prototype.

Mary and one artist started to think about measurements of the single mobile unit, others continued to think about shape and configuration and revised the design, and by 4 p.m. we were cutting out a scale model of the fabric pieces and sewing them together. At 4:40 we thought it would be helpful if we had an old style hiking pack with the aluminum external frame and I zipped over to a second hand store and voila! found what we were looking for and was back in 15 minutes.

Tomorrow we lose one member of the group for the day ( Happy Birthday!) but hopefully will see some others return to help with cutting and sewing during our three hour session tomorrow.
The group composition was visual artists, a poet, graduate students in landscape architecture and fine arts, sustainable living advocates, a professional sewer, and representatives from Musagetes Foundation. We met at Diyode a space in downtown Guelph that is the place to go if you need a workshop space and/or want to learn how to use tools to make your projects.

Mary started off with a slide show with images of houses, shelters and installation/sculpture projects that reflected her interest in exploring how materials and structures could be used as mobile architecture, There was a far ranging and open-ended discussion on what this 5 day workshop might look like with some keen on creating an actual structure, and others interested in open ended discussion about the topic without feeling the necessity to end with an actual construction.

Mobility Architecture was interpreted in a variety of ways including something that was carried, unfolded, rolled, paddled, attached, detached, recycled, or sourced from natural materials. We talked about where mobility architecture was already used (refugee camps, disaster response, homelessness, overcrowding, travelling) and circumstances that might require people to use it in Guelph like natural disaster or urban crowding. While emergency preparedness and disaster response are one lens to view mobility architecture, we also talked about it in relation to community building, gatherings, swaps, ways of creating something that could be used for individual protection and also attach to others to form larger structures.
and X2 Shelters by GEOtectura that also has developed some fantastical ideas about structures of the future.
